230V TO 1 WATT LED DRIVER (tested OK)
Driving a 1W LED with mains is a simple thing. But to glow the LED with its maximum light efficiency, long life, and less cost etc are not so simple. We need 300-350 mA,with 3.6 volt to drive the LED with its maximum efficiency. When we try to increase the ampere in a transformerless supply, initial surge also will increase, which may damage the LED. If we use Zener to control the voltage ,may result in zener damage because of heating of zener. Those who do experiments with transformerless power supply may experienced such damages due to over heat ,In this circuit, 5 diodes are connected between positive and negative pole for getting an out put of 3.5 volt approximate. Since 1N 4007 can handle 1amp at 1000V, gives better result than zener.10uf/250 V electrolytic capacitor can prevent surge voltage to some extent. This circuit can deliver 250 mA ,but you can use additional capacitor for getting more current(upto 350 max) and light intensity accordingly.
click circuit
5 series diodes get little heat while lighting LED,but quite normal.even, provide little ventilation .
Always remember you are with live mains. Do not touch any of the points when connected with mains supply.soldering or repairing the circuit should not be done if the mains connection is not removed

hi ther,
ReplyDeleteI need 2 glow more led . what changes to make
DeleteYou can use 1mfd/250v cap instead of 3.3mfd . remove series diodes ,connect a zener .and connect more LEDS in series in place of 1 led in fig. Efficiency per each LED will be slightly less, but get comparatively more light because of using more LEDs. use a 1W zener with a voltage value just greater than the voltage drop of total series LEDs. for eg. if we use 4 led series, voltage drop will be 3.6X 4 =14.4. We can use 15v or 16 v zener. (change filter cap voltage value accordingly).actually most of the time zener will be idle and never heats because current flows through the 14.4 voltage drop series leds and the leds itself behave as a regulated voltage of 14.4 volt .Since current from 1mfd caps are around 70 ma, led heating also will be less. Then what is the use of zener? In any case ,any series led get open ,there is a chance of bursting filter cap 100mfd,with less voltage rating than 230V.That time zener absorbs the excess voltage. also during any voltage spikes, zener will conduct because LED get a delay of few microseconds due to the 2 electrolytic caps in fig.If we increase current by adding more poly caps, LED get more bright but heat up more. if u can provide heat sink for each led, then we can go for more current by means of increasing the poly cap value.

Dear sir,
ReplyDeletecould you pls post the circuit for connecting more 1W L.E.D as per explained?????Your explanation is not 100% clear for me plssssssssssssss
this ckt is for driving 1 led only . if need to connect just connect leds in series and remove the series diodes. place a zener as explained above comment for safety.
DeleteDear Sir,
ReplyDeleteI want to know about this 3.3uF and 390k parallel network..What is doing it?
dear nandika,
Delete3.3uf reduces the power from the mains to a certain level by means of capacitive reactance, 390K is just for discharging the stored current from capacitor when power is off.
how does change current with increasing capacitor value and cant we get about 750mA by increasing the capacitor value as u mentioned above. if it is can what should be the capacitor value.please explain me.thank for the circuit.
ReplyDeletehi,
ReplyDeletesorry for the late reply coz of my job tight schedules. as a thumb rule u can get 70-75 ma from 1uf poly cap. u can calculate accordingly. but if u try to increase current , more will be heat generation and surge current. so risk of damage of your connected equipment is there. transformerless supply is actually best for low current applications.
Hey very simple circuit, thanks for posting this.
ReplyDeleteThumbs up to the author.
thanks for the comments. you are always welcome
ReplyDeletedear sir,
ReplyDeletei want to know what is the output voltage of the circuit if zener is not connected. what is the max. no f leds i can connect so that i get 3.5 voltage drop on each
by removing the series diode as zener,i have tried 27 LED IN SERIES,with the replacement of 100uf/25V capacitor to 100uf/100V CAPACITOR and found working well since last 7-8 months with a bright light sufficient for a big bed room. 27 nos is not compulsory. i have tried with the available LED with me those days.this circuit output voltage will automatically adjust with the led voltage drops.if you connect 27 SERIES led, out put voltage will be 27X 3.5V approximate...
DeleteCan you please post 230V TO 1 WATT LED DRIVER with transformer circuit diagram for 3,5,7,9 led chips.......
ReplyDeleteDear sir,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for this circuit. I'm using your circuit for my fish aquarium, where i replaced 5 w CFL .I have tried many circuits for my fish tank which uses very less current but was failure or not long lasting. I found a speciality in this circuit is,LED not heating and giving maximum light. only diodes heating slightly.i am using this from last 7 months. Now I am busy with making this light to my friends for their aquariums.THANKS again.....expecting similiar posts from you soon please.
I have read your post. Nice post. It is a useful article for LED driver users. This article give me a additional information about LED light.
ReplyDeleteThanks . you are welcome
ReplyDeleteHi, If I am using 12 x 1W led in series, can I use the 3.3uF poly cap to keep the current up to around 290mA. Will also change filter cap to 100uF 63V and use approximately 42V zener.
ReplyDeleteif use 3.3uf , heat generation will be little more. so prolonged use will damage the led. if u can use heat sink, there will not be any issue.also u will get a bright light.
ReplyDeleteThanks, I am using a large heat sink on the LED's. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the smart circuit.
ReplyDeletefirstly i want thanks for the circuit...,i have one question. if we use heat sink for bulbs.... when it working by this driver, if we touch the heat sink.... will it be danger ???
ReplyDeleteNo. metalic body of LED is not connected to any of the +ve or -ve terminals.so it doesnt matter.but make sure that any of the leads of LED is not touched with heatsink.
ReplyDeleteFirst try with 12 x 1W LEDs........destroyed the 1.3W 44V zener, then blew output cap due to excess voltage. Removed zener, increased output cap voltage - works, but with no protection for LED's. Will have to use larger wattage zener or find another way to provide voltage clamp.
ReplyDeletehi,
ReplyDeleteactually zener will not conduct first because your total led voltage drop will be below 44 volt.ie, output voltage accross leds will be 43.2 approx. if u use 44 volt zener it will not conduct firstand will be idle. dont know what is wrong with. without proper heat dissipation will damage led.if any of series led get open, output voltage rises suddenly and damage zener and low voltage value caps at same instant.cap will burst also. so ensure ur heat sink firmly fixed with each & every led. any led is having loose contact with heat sink, defenitely effect very badly for the entire circuit. As i explained in some of above comments, i have tried with 3uf(1x3,250v) and 27 led max.both electrolytic caps used is,33uf-250v it is still working from about 1 year without any issue.all those leds are firmly fixed with heat sink.can u send your assly photo?just for checking whats wrong.pls be careful while doing experiments . I recomment low value poly cap and more leds . then efficiency of each led wil be less.but led are now becoming cheaper and no energy lose because of heat if use more led & less value polycap(say 1uf). more over heat zink also not necessary.we cannot fix heat sink on led as same in an IC or transistor. it is really a task for getting heat dissipation for all leds. else we have to go for heatsink mounted leds available in market, which is costlier.
thanks
afetr the switch on 3 or 4 hours (3.3uf ,250v capasitor's) heat up gradualy..... then 3.3uf cap burst. what we have to do this fault?
ReplyDeleteHI,
ReplyDeleteUse good quality capacitor. or change caps to a voltage rating of 400v. No chance to burst poly cap in this circuit, even use 24 hrs, unless voltage rating is not sufficient.
whats your LED rating (forward voltage and current)?
ReplyDeletehi Dilandkl,
Deleteit is 1 watt led, normally comes in 3.6 V,350 mA.
Oh one more thing what changes do i need to do to your circuit if i am to power 12 1watt LED's in series?
ReplyDeleteThanks In Advance!
if no plan for heat sink, replace 3.3uf poly cap to 1uf, replace all series diodes, increase voltage rating of 100uf /12 v cap to 63v.( 250 v is very safe,) use zener just below 42 volt for 12 led s . zener will be always idle and has only role in this circuit when by any reason the out put load ( series led s) are not connected or any led get open. that time output voltage hike and zener conduct.
ReplyDeletewhere do I connect zenner diode ? Parallel to the two electrolytic capacitors just before the LED in series?
Deletesir
ReplyDeleteplease give me 5w led circuit.my mail address indueranga@gmail.com
thank you
Thanks to sharing this with us. Really LED driver has a great credit in electric era. We are now enjoying max brightness with few voltages.
ReplyDeleteOne more great thing noticed is, lat week, in our area , main SUPPLY 230V reduced around 11 V because of some electricity board transformer problem and continues the same situation for 2 days . whole the emergency, inverter everything in our area has stopped working and only this 1 watt led circuit was working
ReplyDeletewith its full efficiency. neighbours were asking ,what kind of light is that ? I feel really proud of making this circuit. Thank you very much sirrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I am really surprise by seeing the headline of your post. I have read your post. It is really a helpful post for LED light lover.
ReplyDeleteDear Vineesh,
ReplyDeleteI am Sreenivas, wants to donate some Tube Light Equivalent LED Lights to a Charitable Collage, by few parents (including me).
Can you Pl give me a link/circuit for 1 watt LEDs which are stable and equivalent to Tube Lights.
My mail id is bvsreenivas7@yahoo.com
Thanks & Regards
B V Sreenivas
Dear sreenivas,
ReplyDeleteI have replaced all my CFL and tube lights in home by multiple of 1 watt LED series connection. these light has been running from last few months. I am waiting to see which momemt is that going to blew off.(But actually not giving any problem till now as expected.) LED without heatsink is cheap now . but with heat sink is still costly and we cannot afford if we are making series LED CONNECTION of say 40 + series.. Proper fixing of led with heat sink manually is a time killing job.You can go through the previous comments on series connection for circuit. if you can provide exact heat dissipation to each and every LED , I think you can done... varieties of LED tube lights available in market now but costs thousands range. For me ,a 40 w TUBE LIGHT equivalent LED light manufacturing costs around 270- 300 Rs.(only mtrl cost and my efforts extra ). and still doing experiments to reduce the cost further. transformerless supply with increased current is an un predictable power supply. some times like a calm baby. sometimes like a violent mad man.
I am really surprise to seen your post. It is a great product. This 1 watt LED light will help us a lot. AC Electronics is also providing the same the same product.
ReplyDeletethanks.....................
